2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their popularity has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate Frog Games.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this phenomenon, I conducted a detailed review into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The frog's rising status in the public consciousness is somewhat apparent elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming appears particularly pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs have built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues facilitate a host of unique mechanics.

Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.

If these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
