An Generosity of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Land the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Because my companion was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had booked a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the canteen, where we got some food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I told him that I had just graduated with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the university – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I ought to seek a role with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that night. The man from Iraq came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but straight off informed my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a city where anything feels possible – she responded: “We'll handle it. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in multiple respects. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and request employment. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
