Azzurri Tennis Icon Nicola Pietrangeli Dies at the Age of 92

The world of tennis is mourning a genuine pioneer: Nicola Pietrangeli, a double French Open champion, passed away at ninety-two.

Pietrangeli etched his name by emerging as the pioneering Italian to win a Grand Slam singles title, securing his initial triumph at Roland Garros in 1959 and successfully defending the prestigious trophy a year later.

With a staggering 48 career titles, Pietrangeli was widely considered the country's most accomplished player until the advent of current star and four-time major winner Jannik Sinner.

"The sport in Italy is in mourning for an titan. Nicola Pietrangeli, the only Italian honored in the World Tennis Hall of Fame, has died," confirmed the Italian Tennis Federation.

Beyond his pair of French Open victories, Pietrangeli also finished as runner-up in Paris in both 1961 and 1964.

He boasts a remarkable 164 matches played for Italy in the prestigious team competition, securing victories in 120 of them, and spearheaded his country to its first title in 1976.

Officials of the Italian Open, an event where he was a two-time winner, stated: "It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to Nicola Pietrangeli, a veritable legend of Italian tennis..."
