The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of his transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
