Canadian Rider Derek Gee Faces 30 Million Euro Damages Claim Following Agreement Ending Over 'Personal Belief'

Canadian cyclist Derek Gee stated publicly he faces a massive legal demand totaling 30 million euros from his former team, Israel-Premier Tech. This follows his choice to terminate his agreement based on what he described as "deeply held convictions."

Departure Before Key Event and Key Motivations

The 28-year-old, who finished fourth in the general classification at the recent Giro d’Italia, departed from Israel-Premier Tech shortly before September’s Vuelta a España. That race was subject to extensive pro-Palestinian protests connected with the conflict in Gaza.

"I terminated my contract for valid reasons, as is every person’s right when they are unable to keep fulfilling their duties in the current situation," Gee explained in a social media post.

He noted that his choice was not taken lightly and came after a broken relationship with the team's leader, in addition to serious concerns related to racing for the team from safety and ethical perspective. These issues deeply affected his moral judgment, he added.

Official Stance and Legal Proceedings

The team informed Reuters they were unable to provide a statement on the matter as the case is now with the arbitration panel of cycling's governing body, the international cycling union. Reuters also reached out to the governing body for comment.

Gee admitted that leaving the team meant being without an agreement or protection in case of injury, but stated this was a chance he was willing to take since he was unable to keep competing for the team.

Substantial Demand and Rebranding News

"I recognize the team has a different view," Gee went on. "However, I am now facing what is described as a damages claim said to exceed approximately €30m – simply for exercising my fundamental rights as an athlete and individual."

He shared that this situation strengthens my belief that departing the squad was the right decision, despite the recent announcement of branding changes and organizational adjustments.

It remains unclear what the €30m figure represents. Professional cyclists usually make only a fraction of that sum during their racing years.

In related news, the team announced on Monday that they will undertake a full rebrand for the 2026 season, distancing themselves from their Israeli identity after more than a decade.
