Donald Trump along with Japan's Recently Appointed Prime Minister Share Compliments and Commit to Strengthen ‘Extraordinary’ Bond

During a latest trip to Tokyo, former US President Donald Trump and the Japanese recently elected Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi exchanged friendly praise and pledged to enhance the already strong two-way relations.

Highlights from the Meeting

Trump praised Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘great’ leader and congratulated her on assuming the role of Japan's inaugural woman premier. During their talks at Tokyo's official venue, Trump voiced optimism that she would become one of the ‘outstanding leaders’ of the country.

The prime minister, who is a protégée of former Japanese leader Abe, praised his efforts to address global conflicts and according to sources vowed to nominate him for the prestigious award.

Economic and Security Deals

Both governments revealed a list of joint projects in sectors such as power, AI, and rare earths. Japan-based firms are exploring funding of up to $400 billion in the United States.

Additionally, Japan had earlier pledged $550 billion in strategic American projects, financing, and guarantees as part of an agreement to secure exemption from Trump's import duties.

These moves are seen as potentially easing any future demands from the US side for Tokyo to increase its defense spending. Takaichi addressed this by promising to accelerate plans to raise military budget to two percent of gross domestic product.

Other Political Updates

  • Trump did not rule out to a third term, although it is legally impossible. He remarked he ‘would love’ to serve again but would not exploit a vice presidential loophole.
  • Michigan representative Tlaib responded to his comments, declaring, “No way in hell we’re going to let that happen.”
  • California Governor Newsom indicated he will decide on a White House bid after the upcoming elections.
  • The head of America’s biggest government employees union called for an end to the federal closure, which is currently the second longest in American history.
  • Republican leader Johnson criticized opposition figure Jeffries for supporting a candidate in the New York City mayor’s race.
  • Indiana governor Braun declared a special session to reconsider electoral maps.
  • Democratic leaders in several regions are considering redistricting in response to Republican efforts.
“Everything I know from Shinzo and others, you will be one of the great prime ministers,” Trump told the prime minister. “I’d also like to congratulate you on being the first woman prime minister. It’s a big deal,” he continued.

This meeting underscores the ongoing importance of the US-Japan partnership and sets the stage for further cooperation on trade, defense, and diplomatic areas.
