If Jude Bellingham hopes to earn his place back into the English best team, he would be wise to eliminate the nonsense. His reaction upon realizing that he was being shown after an evening of inconsistency in the match against Albania was not good enough.
"I don’t want to blow it out of proportion but I stick to my words 'attitude matters' and consideration for the squad members who enter the game," Tuchel said. "Decisions are made and you have to accept it being a professional."
There is a lesson for Bellingham. There was no call for an outburst. Kane had only moments earlier made it England leading by two in a meaningless fixture, the game had six minutes to go and Bellingham, who had not played particularly well, was just shown a yellow for bringing down the Albanian striker. This was hardly a controversial substitution. Indeed it would have been foolish for Tuchel to not substitute him because there was a chance Bellingham would make himself ineligible of the initial fixture of the competition by getting a second yellow card.
However, the player drew all eyes toward himself. There was no disguising the young midfielder's disappointment when he clocked that he would be substituted for a teammate. He flung his arms in the air and although he shook Tuchel’s hand on his way to the sideline it was clear that the head coach did not appreciate it.
Here lies the test facing Bellingham. He congratulated his teammate for providing the assist for the captain to head in the team's second, but everything else was self-defeating. There was no chance arguing was going to alter the decision. Tuchel has stressed repeatedly honoring the team structure and the importance of behaving correctly.
He, not included in the team last month, has faced close inspection after returning to the squad in the current camp. Practically he has been on trial and he hasn't helped his case through his behavior to coming off the pitch as the side completed a perfect qualifying campaign by defeating a spirited effort from the Albanian team.
As a result opinions are divided on whether England operate most effectively including Bellingham. What we saw was not definitive. There was experimentation by the coach early on. Under him, England have gained England organization and direction in recent months, using a holding player, a box-to-box player, a No 10 and specialist wingers, but there was a different feel versus Albania. The young defender was given his first cap, the midfielder started for the first time internationally and the role of John Stones as a makeshift midfielder gave a passing resemblance to Manchester City’s 2023 treble winners.
His performance was inconsistent. He created an opportunity for Eberechi Eze after the break but frequently appeared overly eager to shine. There were a lot of rushed, misplaced passes. There was a needless bit of aggro with an Albania midfielder in the early stages. England were ragged after halftime. An opportunity for Albania resulted from he lost the ball cheaply. His caution came after an opponent took the ball from Broja and fouled the attacker.
Ultimately the bench quality made the difference. The coach brought on the Manchester City player, who appeared better suited to the position in which Bellingham operated during the first half, and Bukayo Saka. Later Saka provided a set-piece for Kane to break the deadlock. It highlighted that corners and free-kicks will be crucial at the World Cup.
However, all talk was about Bellingham. The excellence of the winger's delivery for the second goal was somewhat overlooked due to the fuss of the substitution incident. When the match concluded, everyone was watching the midfielder. Tuchel came over behind him and directed the player towards the travelling England fans. Their relationship is not broken. The coach isn't ready to abandon him at this stage. However, whether he is willing to grant him a starring role remains in doubt.
