The future president of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that followed his controversial online comments about Charlie Kirk.
The vote against George Abaraonye achieved the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the organization.
The controversy erupted after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while addressing a college in the United States.
According to sources, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The president-elect is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.
The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on this week.
Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The announcement stated that the president-elect was considered to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.
Proceedings were temporarily halted early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".
His statement categorically refuted that any representative appointed by the student had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.
The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he remained the elected leader.
His statement added that he was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Opponents have argued that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".
On recently, Mikey McCoy presented an open letter to the Oxford Union on a related program broadcast.
The letter accused the union of becoming a institution where "student leaders publicly celebrate the assassination of a political opponent".
The statement warned that if the student were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".
The society had earlier condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and stated that concerns filed against him had been referred for official review.
The president-elect had been one of multiple members to discuss with Kirk at the union in spring.
