Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
