The Video Platform Provides Users Authority to Limit AI-Generated Media in Personal Streams

Users will soon have a updated setting that allows them to lessen the amount of AI-created media appearing in their streams. This step comes as the platform revealed that it now features more than 1 billion AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a full-scale release. This shift comes amid a rise in content created by AI, driven by new video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that almost 10% of the most rapidly expanding content creators on a competing service only show AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this material is considered “AI slop”, a phrase for poor-quality, factory-style content that is often illogical or dreamlike.

Our research shows that many people like content produced via AI tools, including computer-generated images to educational videos, and we intend to give people the option to adjust the amount of that, according to their own choices,” stated a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The platform announced that there are now over a billion videos on its network labeled as AI-generated. In total, over 100 m media items are added to the app every day, making clips made by AI a relatively small percentage of its total content library.

Customizing Your Feed

Users will be able to limit or boost the amount of AI-generated videos they view by using the topic control setting in the platform and choosing AI-made media. Additional categories that are already be modified under the filter cover news, fashion, cosmetics, and dance.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s guidelines oblige users to label “realistic” artificially created content, and it bans harmful deepfakes of well-known individuals or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is without a tag can be deleted under its terms of service.

Additionally, the platform will henceforth attach an “AI-made” tag to content made using its own AI tools, or identified by an cross-platform project for recognizing content made by AI. This measure is intended to deter users from attempting to evade the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is also launching a two million dollar AI literacy fund for specialists and organizations to develop informative material about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support charitable organizations specializing in teaching computer science.

Platform Protection

The platform has supported its content review process, amid debate over plans to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in the United Kingdom. The company is expected to cut 439 jobs in its user protection team in London, with labor groups and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A company official stated that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but AI can protect employees by eliminating the most harmful content before it gets reviewed by staff. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content seen by safety staff over the previous year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to combine staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to unsafe media as swiftly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is proving valuable operate efficiently.”
