This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical body horror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
