Trump Compels the Thai government to Recommit to Cambodia Ceasefire with Tariff Warnings

The United States has applied pressure on Thailand to reaffirm its dedication to a ceasefire agreement with Cambodia, warning that trade talks could be paused as efforts are made to stop a Trump-mediated peace agreement from collapsing.

Rising Border Hostilities

Earlier this week, Thailand declared it was putting on hold the ceasefire deal, alleging Cambodia of laying fresh landmines along the mutual frontier, among them an incident that reportedly wounded a Thai soldier on duty, who suffered a foot amputation in the explosion.

Since then, a fatality occurred and multiple individuals injured by exchanges of fire along the border between the two nations, raising concerns of a new round of retaliatory clashes.

US Trade Pressure

On Saturday, a representative from Thailand's foreign office told journalists that a official communication from the U.S. trade office announcing the suspension of trade deal talks was obtained on Friday night.

He quoted the letter as stating that discussions on trade – which are focusing on a 19 percent American duty – could resume once the Thai government renewed its pledge to carrying out the joint ceasefire declaration.

“Tariff negotiations will continue and remain separate from border issues,” said a different official representative.

Trump’s Tariff Threat

Addressing reporters on Air Force One as he traveled to the Sunshine State on the end of the week, the US leader implied that he had employed tariff warnings in calls with the ASEAN nation heads.

The US president said, “Today, I prevented a conflict using tariffs, the menace of duties,” adding, “they are performing well. I believe they will be okay.”

Truce Deal Origins

The President witnessed the finalization of a peace deal, conducted in Malaysian territory this October, and has touted it as one of several deals around the globe he says should win him the Nobel Peace prize.

The worst fighting in a decade between Thai and Cambodian troops erupted in July, with gunfire, artillery and airstrikes causing numerous fatalities and hundreds of thousands forced to flee.

Historic Frontier Conflict

Thailand and Cambodia have a longstanding border dispute that dates back to conflicts regarding maps from the colonial period drawn up by the French. Historic shrines along the frontier are disputed by each nation.
