Synthetic images claiming to depict Venezuela's president in custody following his capture by the US have garnered many millions of views on social media.
Initial inauthentic synthetic picture apparently showing him taken off a aircraft surfaced within hours. The graphic was absent from any official American sources; rather, it was published on the platform X by an profile describing itself as an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Verification involved an AI-watermark detector, determining the picture was produced or modified with AI tools.
Additional AI-generated visuals were disseminated in the subsequent hours, seemingly depicting different views of Maduro detained. Noticeable identifying marks on the graphics reveal they came from an Instagram profile named ultravfx.
AI analysis says these additional pictures were likewise generated or edited generative models.
Donald Trump posted the first real photo of Maduro restrained aboard the US Navy ship on that morning. Yet following this real photo was made public, AI-generated images persisted online but were altered to incorporate the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.
Online investigation reveal these altered fabrications were first posted on TikTok by a graphic design profile. Once again, the AI-watermark detector says these subsequent pictures were created or altered generative artificial intelligence.
