A 14-year-old youth was found dead only a few days after being wrongly accused of taking the cremated remains of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has heard.

Tragic Finding

Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his body in his bedroom at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.

Untrue Accusations Start

The inquest learned how his mother received a communication on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a woman inquiring if Kai was her child. The communication stated: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."

In a statement read to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the news, claiming her baby's remains had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was untrue.

Police Investigation

An official inquiry from authorities later determined the alleged burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that said property was not taken in the first place".

Media reports about the supposed stolen ashes attracted social media responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".

The "social media content were really upsetting", she stated.

Emotional Health Impact

She explained that her son had been diagnosed with moderate ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions really mattered to him.

"It would have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was not true".

The teenager was detained at home, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a police station and later freed pending further inquiry.

Police said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his passing.

Isolation and Anxiety

His parent said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could seem like much longer".

When she talked to him about the supposed incident, she said her son informed her he had entered the residence because the resident who resided there had said he could use the toilet whenever he wanted, but denied removing anything.

Digital Bullying

In a joint statement between her and her spouse, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being harassed digitally after the accusations.

The inquest learned that a young adult encouraged Kai to end his life.

She had no worries on the evening before he died, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".

She described him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is totally devastated".

He had been "clearly concealing his worries", she said, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".

School Reaction

The inquest received testimony from school staff at the local High School.

On November 8th, she "overheard some boys discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the first I learned".

"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.

After the discussion, the staff member said she called the family's parents' telephone and left a message saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.

The court heard his family said they never receive that communication.

Formal Conclusion

Lead coroner informed the inquest he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling individuals with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.

Delivering a narrative conclusion, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a young individual.

"Probably falsehoods were afterwards embellished and amplified through the platform of online networks.

"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and following his questioning he was released whilst investigations proceeded."

The coroner concluded: "There is no evidence that the actions or omissions of any agency led to or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal act it is not possible to discern his intent."
